The past few years have hit like a ton of bricks- we’ve been struck from all angles and forced to rise up and persevere. Luckily, adversity tends to build character, strengthen our resolve, light the fire beneath us that forces us to do better, be better. We’ve shaken off the dust of the past and we’re ready to push forward, full speed ahead.

Through the lens of this renewed spirit, it's important to remember there are many communities without the means or ability to strengthen their resolve when faced with misfortune. Help is needed, anywhere and everywhere- what better time to volunteer? Volunteering is the perfect way to empower your community, establish and reinforce friendships and bolster self esteem, all while contributing charitability to those in need.

The initial commitment of time, energy or finances can be daunting- here are a few tips to get you started on the path toward generosity and compassion.

Find a Good Cause.

Everyone has a cause near and dear to their heart- do your best to identify one of yours and try to focus on problems specific to your area. Animal shelters and food banks are a great place to start; dogs will always need walks and people will always need to be fed. For those who prefer to work with children or the elderly, an afternoon playing catch with a kid or reading a book to a senior can enrich your heart as much as theirs.

Do your research to ensure your resources are being used wisely and keep current on the needs of your community. Be cognizant of time-sensitive issues and devote your energy based on urgency.

Decide What Works for You.

It's easy to view volunteering as a full-time, hands-on undertaking. While oftentimes this can be true, there are many less arduous paths reserved for those looking to dabble. Some folks have entire weekends to spare while others can donate only a few spare moments, and both of these options are viable, however, need to be in sync with the organization at hand. Be realistic about your abilities and know that no help is too small.

Research volunteer organizations in your area and find opportunities that line up with your schedule. While a cause might align with your values, be sure the commitment needed aligns with your means. Keep in kind, many tasks can likely be done from home!

Get Out There!

The fortification of your compassion and generosity of spirit are invaluable, as is resting in the solace of knowing you’ve done good for others, but there are many other benefits to volunteering as well. Establishing connections, nurturing new friendships, broadening your support networks and learning more about causes close to your heart all help to round off the hard edges of humanity. Love is cyclical- giving begets getting.

We must all do our best to evaluate, recognize and share our good fortune. Volunteering engages your mind, body and soul- welcome the nutritive reciprocation and watch your community thrive.
